Het Parool temporarily stops restaurant reviews
Now that restaurants (except those in hotels) have closed their doors, Het Parool is temporarily stopping its restaurant reviews. ‘Although my stress is nothing compared to the stress the hospitality industry is experiencing, you may be able to imagine that my work has been difficult in recent weeks,’ says reviewer Gilles van der Loo.
Gilles, in Het Parool: ‘More bankruptcies await us, winter is coming. Amsterdam’s hospitality industry will look different, but the need for people to meet each other over a glass or a meal is – as evidenced by the resurgence of coronavirus in recent weeks – greater than the threat of the virus. Restaurants will always be there, no matter how long this second wave lasts or how many more waves may come. So this is definitely not the end of Proefwerk, but because nobody knows how the situation will develop in the coming months, I am suspending restaurant reviews until further notice.’
Nostalgic fare
In the coming weeks, you will still be able to read about food and drink in Het Parool; Gilles will visit special people with a crate of ingredients for a conversation about taste and memory – and provide a corresponding recipe.
Reviewing hotel restaurants
‘And how do you do that?’, people ask us. During the first lockdown, we immediately started reviewing takeaway and delivery meals. We will continue writing about special takeaways (such as those delicious meatballs from BAUT! and the fantastic rijsttafel from Ron Blaauw), but we are now also reviewing hotel restaurants – suddenly the only places where we can still dine out. And completely safe too! The only drawback is an advantage: you have to stay overnight. In the coming weeks, we will therefore be trying out hotels overnight. In search of the best restaurant hotel, but also to give the hospitality industry a helping hand.
