How do you know if your egg is still good?

Eieren checken

I don’t know how we manage it, but at our place there are always eggs lying around everywhere. Super inconvenient, of course. Because how long have those eggs been there? Are they still safe to eat, or ready for the trash? If you don’t have a carton with a best-before date, it’s a little difficult to estimate. Until now. There’s actually a trick you can use to check whether your egg is still good.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? We wouldn’t know, but we do know that there has been quite a bit of fuss surrounding eggs in recent years. Fuss about vaccine eggs, misleading egg cartons, tighter export rules, eggs from backyard chickens that may not be safethe list goes on and on. We’ll keep things a little simpler this time, although it’s at least as important, if you ask us. Because nobody wants to eat a rotten egg. That gives us at least as much of a stomachache as all the egg-related fuss above.

Checking whether your egg is still good: here’s how

Want to check whether your egg is still good? It’s a piece of cake. All you need is a glass of water. Put the egg in question in it. Now you need to take a good look at how the egg behaves in the water. There are four possibilities, each indicating a different outcome:

  • Does your egg sink flat to the bottom? Yesss, you can still eat it! An egg that sinks flat to the bottom means it’s still super fresh.
  • Does your egg sink to the bottom, but point diagonally upward? Then the egg is one to two weeks old. You can still eat it without a problem.
  • Does your egg sink to the bottom, but point straight upward? Then your egg is two to four weeks old. You might be in doubt now, but even in this case you can still eat your egg. Eggs have a best-before date of four weeks, or 28 days. This is legally established.
  • Does your egg float? Oops. Then the egg is rotten and no longer safe to eat. Straight to the trash, then.

Egg-ndless tips and tricks with eggs

So? Can you still fry an egg? Then make sure you don’t make one of these mistakes. You have an egg that’s still good, only to ruin it by not preparing it properly… Such a shame, of course. For the egg peelers among us, we have another smart hack for peeling your egg in no time. And did you know there’s also a trick for bringing your eggs from the fridge to room temperature super quickly? Very chill if you don’t have the time (or patience) to wait before making your bake. So, egg-ndless possibilities with your eggs!
