How many Easter eggs do you have to eat to gain 1 kilo?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve already lost count of the bags of Easter eggs I’ve eaten by now. Because those Easter eggs filled with Kinder Bueno crème—so delicious! But how many of those little devils do you actually have to eat to gain a kilo?

This year, we’re drowning in Easter eggs, and the choice is absolutely enormous. The editorial team’s favorites? The new Bossche Bol Easter eggs from Jumbo, the Easter eggs filled with Flügel, the cookie dough eggs from HEMA, the Jumbo Vlaflip and, oh yes, don’t forget the all-time favorite: white praline. But after devouring all these eggs, do we need to buy a king-size swimsuit, or is it really not that bad?

One Easter egg here, one Easter egg there

To gain one kilo, you have to eat 7,000 calories more than you need. If you want to do that over the course of a week, that works out to 1,000 extra calories per day. So that’s on top of the usual 2,000 calories a woman—or 2,500 calories a man—needs daily. The question now is: exactly how many Easter eggs does that amount to?

Temporarily

For convenience, let’s take the average number of calories in an Easter egg. Plain chocolate Easter eggs contain fewer calories than Easter eggs filled with a smooth nut paste. So: 44 calories on average. To reach 7,000 calories, in addition to your usual 2,000 or 2,500, you have to eat 159 eggs. A standard bag contains approximately 25 eggs.

Eat 6 of them and you’ve gained a kilo. Since the bags have been on the shelves for a while now, I think I’ll manage those 6 before Easter—or wait a minute: 12. That’s 2 kilos. Oh well, it’s only temporary, right? After Easter, we’ll get back to salads and green smoothies in full force.
