This week marks the fourth edition of National Meat-Free Week. That means that this week, quite a few people are leaving steak and chicken off the menu for a while and choosing vegetarian food instead. We all know vegetarians, of course, but do you know these other -tarians yet?

Eating vegetarian food is a good idea for various reasons. By eating less meat, you help improve animal welfare, it’s better for the environment, and it also has benefits for you. A vegetarian diet lowers your blood pressure and also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. These days, you can put incredibly tasty dishes on the table without meat, but we’ve also selected a few top recipes for all the other -tarians.

The flexitarian

Flexitarians choose not to eat meat one or more days a week, but they aren’t completely vegetarian. Vegetarians don’t eat meat or fish at all, but they do use products of animal origin that don’t require an animal to die, such as eggs and milk. Here you’ll find plenty of recipes without meat or fish, ideal for both flexitarians and vegetarians.

The pescatarian

Pescatarians don’t eat meat, but they do eat fish. In dishes such as ceviche or sushi, it’s often all about the fish. But this recipe for garlic prawns in white wine, Thai salad with calamari and linguine alle vongole, with fish taking centre stage, will also delight a pescatarian.

The pollotarian

Pollotarians eat poultry, but no other types of meat or fish. This spicy chicken satay, chicken kebab and Indonesian laksa ayam (chicken soup) are suitable for any pollotarian. If you eat poultry, make sure you choose quality. So leave that factory-farmed chicken on the shelf and visit a poultry butcher.

The vegan

Vegans don’t eat meat, fish or other animal products such as eggs, dairy products and honey. This means that vegans go one step further than vegetarians and eat only plant-based products. But there are also plenty of delicious dishes for anyone who eats a completely vegan diet. How about this spicy warm baby-potato salad, beetroot gazpacho or Bounty cake? 100% vegan and incredibly delicious!

The fruitarian

Fruitarians eat only parts of a plant that can be harvested without killing the plant, such as fruit, nuts and seeds. This can be in the form of a juice or simply enjoyed in its natural form. You can also grill fruit, such as grapefruit. And especially for fruitarians: with these tips, your fruit will stay fresh for much longer.
