Huh, where have all the green kiwis in the supermarket gone?

Is the green kiwi your favorite fruit? The healthy snack that always finds its way into your bag (or onto your pizza)? Then you may have been disappointed lately when going to the supermarket. The green vitamin-packed fruits are hardly on the shelves. How can that be?

As we have been hearing more often these days, it all has to do with a poor harvest. Green kiwis grow in New Zealand, and they too are dealing with the effects of climate change. Flooding and landslides meant that far fewer flowers grew on the kiwi plants. The result: fewer kiwis. And therefore empty supermarket shelves worldwide.

Have you also noticed that the kiwis that are still on the shelves are much bigger than usual? That could be right. The kiwis that survived the poor harvest season were given extra energy. As a result, they were able to grow to XL size. Fewer kiwis, then, but extra-large ones.

When will they be in stores?

Fortunately, we will not have to wait much longer for our vitamin friends. If all goes well, green kiwis will be back in Jumbo and Albert Heijn in about a week. That is because the kiwi season from Italy will start then, an Albert Heijn spokesperson tells AD. So we still have to make do with other vitamin C heroes for just a little while longer to keep our resistance up.
