I bought the super-hyped ‘happy’ Scrub Daddy sponge and here’s what I think
You probably know the feeling: suddenly you’ve been influenced by a genuine TikTok hit. In my case: the Scrub Daddy. On TikTok, this cheerful sponge is touted as the Ferrari of sponges, capable of getting absolutely everything sparkling clean. From your bathtub to your oven, and from your garlic press to even the bottoms of your pans. Does it really work? I tested the Scrub Daddy on the inside of my oven.
The Scrub Daddy isn’t cheap: the sponge costs €3.99 (at Blokker). For that price, you can buy 10 regular scouring sponges. Is it worth the expense? I put it to the test (read: oven).
The Scrub Daddy changes texture
Notable: the sponge’s texture changes depending on the temperature of the water. In warm water, it becomes soft and absorbent, while in cold water it becomes hard and firm. The latter is ideal for scrubbing and scouring.
Great for getting your fingers in
This sponge doesn’t just brighten up your kitchen counter; the happy face actually has a purpose. For example, you can easily remove red wine residue from the inside of a wine glass by poking your fingers through the sponge’s eyes for extra grip. Push the sponge into a glass, make a rotating motion and voilà: the glass is clean in one movement.
Have a spoon that needs polishing? Put it in Scrub Daddy’s mouth and the sponge cleans both the top and bottom at the same time. The sponge’s spikes also let you reach the narrow gaps and grooves of your stovetop. Handy!
The test
I tested the Scrub Daddy on my oven and I have to admit: my oven had been due for a thorough cleaning for some time. I tossed the hyped sponge into a bucket of cold water and could start scrubbing right away. I was a little skeptical; according to Scrub Daddy, it isn’t necessary to use cleaning products.
I started scrubbing the inside of the oven without soap, but after a few minutes I did use some cleaning product after all, so the oven would smell fresh too. There was a lot of foam, and after a few minutes of scrubbing I could already see results. I was able to remove even the most stubborn spots. In fact, within fifteen minutes I had to introduce myself to my oven all over again, because I didn’t recognize it anymore—it was that clean.
Conclusion
You wouldn’t normally call me for cleaning tips; I’d much rather be told about the best wine bar in town or Sergio Herman’s newest restaurant, but I can genuinely recommend this sponge to everyone. My oven is sparkling clean again.
