This sandwich is the big winner of the 2023 Dutch National Tastiest Sandwich Championship
There are sandwiches, such as this boring Dutch snack, and then there are truly delicious sandwiches where every bite is a celebration. Roland Biermans’ sandwich is one of them. He won the title of Dutch National Tastiest Sandwich during Horecava in Amsterdam.
Many hospitality entrepreneurs and chefs can take part in the various ‘Dutch National Tastiest competitions’ during Horecava. There is a Dutch National Tastiest Pasta, Pizza Baking and Loaded Fries competition, for example. The Dutch National Tastiest Sandwich is the best-known and longest-running competition at Horecava. This year marked its 38th edition.
Dutch National Tastiest Sandwich
During the competition for the tastiest sandwich, twelve participants have time (specifically: within eight minutes) to prepare five identical sandwiches for the jury.
Neusje van de Zalm
Just like last year, a range of meticulously crafted filled sandwiches appeared on the jury table. This time, Ronald Biermans of Vitam in Rosmalen managed to take first place with his ‘Neusje van de Zalm’. And we can see why, because a vegetable bagel topped with vegetables, smoked and pickled winter carrot prepared like salmon, homemade bitterballen with a salmon filling, and a salmon-and-pesto caviar sounds delicious. The jury agreed: ‘Every bite offered a different experience, yet the sandwich as a whole came together beautifully.’
Won again
Incidentally, this is not the first time Ronald has won. He also took first place in the previous three editions. This makes Ronald the first person ever to win this competition four times in a row. ‘The fourth time—it’s surreal. I was actually about to stop after all these years, but I still wanted to take part one more time. To win then is incredible,’ said the very happy winner.
Bas Diks of Disks Authentiek Culinair came second with the ‘Mijn Achtertuin’ sandwich. In third place—remarkably—was Ronald’s daughter, Audrey Biermans, with her ‘Golden Duck’ sandwich.
