Cooking is a creative pursuit, and chefs are actually a kind of artist. But sometimes they take their artistry too far, for example when they serve the fish appetizer in a toolbox and popcorn in a used clog. And if you think these are ridiculous exceptions, you haven’t seen the rest yet.

The American website We Want Plates collects photos of dishes that are presented in bizarre ways, and tries to figure out what on earth possessed the chef to skewer meat on barbed wire or put soup in stilettos. Most of the complaints come from people who aren’t happy with food being served on a small board or a tile, especially when it involves dishes with sauce that then drips across the table and onto your lap.

Don’t slurp from a jam jar

More than 700,000 people follow We Want Plates on Facebook and Twitter, so they are certainly not fighting a losing battle. They continue to campaign against food being served on pieces of scrap wood or roof tiles, and drinks that you have to slurp from a jam jar, or from a stone with a hole in it.
