In Vietnam, you can now ‘withdraw’ rice
How do you help each other through the coronavirus crisis? Vietnam has come up with a beautiful answer. People can now ‘withdraw’ free rice from a corona-proof rice ATM.

An ATM that dispenses free rice: it may well be one of the most remarkable and original initiatives since the coronavirus outbreak. An initiative that is also desperately needed. Businesses in Vietnam are also required to keep their doors closed, leaving many people suddenly at home without an income to pay for their daily groceries. The rice ATM is now available for those hit hardest.
Vietnam has recorded 265 cases of coronavirus and, remarkably, zero deaths. These figures are considerably lower than in the rest of the world. Nevertheless, to prevent further spread, the government has enforced social distancing, causing many small businesses to close and thousands of people to become unemployed.
Withdrawing rice 24/7
The machines are located in various major cities in Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Residents can fill a bag with free rice here 24/7. Naturally, the process is completely corona-proof. The only requirements are maintaining a distance of 1.5 metres and disinfecting your hands with hand sanitiser before the bag can be filled with rice.
