Invest a few euros and pour olive oil like a pro

Is your bottle of olive oil next to the stove? Do you pour from a wobbly plastic bottle? Or do you have one of those fancy bottles that perfectly matches the vinegar bottle, soap dispenser and the rest of the kitchen in terms of design? Whatever you do: put a pour spout on your bottle, and you’ll work like a real professional.

Some people simply pour the olive oil from the bottle they bought it in. If it’s one of those transparent plastic bottles from the supermarket, it ends up on the countertop or in the cupboard. A little sticky from the drops running back down the bottle and, above all: not ideal for keeping olive oil fruity. Light and heat oxidize the oil, making it taste rancid more quickly. And that large opening for pouring the oil can quickly go wrong: oops, a huge pool of olive oil in the dressing or pan.

Dark bottle is better

Avoid all that trouble and transfer the olive oil to a dark bottle, such as an empty wine bottle you’ve rinsed out. If you really want to go all out like a pro, invest in a pour spout. These have a cork at the base, so they fit nicely on a wine bottle (or on the dark bottle you bought). If you have the fancier version, there’s a flap on the spout that seals the olive oil when the bottle is upright. When you pour, you get that beautiful curl in the pan you see in cooking videos. The bottle goes upright again, no drips or spills, problem solved.

A few euros and you’re done

How much does such a handy pour spout cost? Spend around four euros and you’re all set. And that spout will last for years. Does it get dirty? Run it through the dishwasher and it will be as good as new.
