It doesn’t get any crazier: cooking a steak in a toaster

Think you’ve seen it all? Think again. This professional chef says you can cook perfect steaks… in a toaster. Dear readers: don’t try this at home!

Professional chefs judge whether a steak is perfectly cooked by pressing the ball of their hand. A relaxed ball of the hand feels just like a raw steak, and the more tense the hand muscles are, the more well-done the steak. And of course, you can stick a meat thermometer into your steak if you’re more of a ‘measure twice, cook once’ kind of person. But Craig Harker says he has discovered a third method. He simply puts the steak in the toaster and bam, perfect steak.
Taking a rare turn
Is Craig Harker of sound mind? He works in the kitchen of The George Pub and Grill in Stockton-on-Tees in Durham, which he also owns. But now he’s at home, missing his pots and pans, and sometimes thoughts take a strange turn. Like this one: he saw a video of someone cooking steak in a toaster, and decided to try it too. ‘The first steak that came out was still too rare,’ he reports from his experiments. ‘I put it in again, and then it was overcooked. By adjusting the toaster settings, I achieved the perfect doneness: beautifully brown on the outside, with a crispy edge of fat, and wonderfully pink inside.
Fun to watch
‘I would never serve this to guests,’ says Craig. ‘But it’s fun to show people that it can be done.’ By all means do what you can’t resist, Craig, but we really aren’t convinced. It’ll cost you your toaster, and you might suddenly find yourself in the dark if moisture from your steak drips into the toaster and causes a short circuit. Our advice: butter, frying pan, herbs – call it old-fashioned, but a really delicious steak still comes from the stove, doesn’t it?
