What is a kiwiberry?

A kiwiberry is a small, round piece of fruit about the size of a large grape, but without the familiar hairy skin of a kiwi. This means you can eat a kiwiberry straight out of hand, without having to peel it. Did you know you don’t have to do that with an ordinary kiwi either? Many people only eat the inside of a kiwi, but the outside is also very tasty! So don’t throw away your kiwi skins anymore. (It also helps if you can’t poop).

What does a kiwiberry taste like?

The flavour of a kiwiberry is a delicious combination of the sweetness of a grape and the fresh, sweet-tart flavour of a green kiwi. The texture is soft, juicy and tropical, making it an ideal little snack.

Where do kiwiberries come from?

The kiwiberries on Lidl’s shelves come from French producer Nergi, from Peyrerhorade (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). These little fruits grow in clusters on a vine that can climb as high as six metres. The kiwiberries are carefully cultivated, with male and female plants mixed together for an optimal harvest.

Each plant produces between 10 and 50 kilos of vitamin-rich berries. The harvest season runs from the end of August to mid-September, and the berries are picked by hand to prevent damage. A traditional harvest that respects nature—that’s something we love.

Why kiwiberries are so delicious

What makes kiwiberries so appealing? First of all, the aforementioned flavour is delicious! They are sweeter than green kiwi, with a fresh, sweet-and-sour taste reminiscent of a grape, but with a tropical twist. Delicious to snack on as they are, but also a lovely addition to smoothies or yoghurt. Or sprinkle some kiwiberries over your dessert as a topping. Feeling more creative? Turn them into a jam or chutney.

Kiwiberries: yes, they’re healthy too

Another great thing: kiwiberries are incredibly healthy! They are packed with vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants that help give your immune system a major boost. In addition, kiwiberries are low in calories and rich in nutrients. These berries provide not only a healthy dose of vitamins, but are also juicy and refreshing. A great office snack for when you need a little boost and don’t want to reach for a biscuit.

Be careful if you have a kiwi allergy

Do you have an allergy to kiwi? Then there’s a good chance you’re also allergic to kiwiberries. Although the berries are smaller and softer, like ordinary kiwi they contain actinidin (a protein-breaking enzyme). So be careful if you’re allergic to kiwi.
