Lidl launches Christmas campaign for children living in poverty

Are your preparations for Christmas all about untangling the Christmas lights, nibbling on Christmas cookies and testing Christmas menus all week? Not everyone is quite so happily immersed in the festive spirit. For example, 1 in 13 children in the Netherlands lives in poverty. Lidl wants to do something about that during the Christmas season. They have come up with a campaign to support a good cause for children.

Every supermarket is overflowing with delicious luxury snacks in December. Under the excuse of ‘trying out the Christmas menu’, Lidl’s turkey roulade sometimes appears on the table on Tuesday evening, while we happily toss the sweet potato fries through the bacon mayonnaise. It’s a shame that not every family gets to celebrate like this. In the Netherlands, 1 in 13 children grows up in a family with little money—sometimes even too little to eat.

Sad little boy

If you’re a little emotionally incontinent around Christmas (guilty!), Lidl’s saccharine Christmas video hits hard. A sad little boy in a quiet house, with a cardboard Christmas tree and a pancake for Christmas dinner—awww. The video is the launch of Lidl’s campaign to support the Jeugdeducatiefonds. This charity is committed to increasing the development opportunities of children growing up in poverty.

Christmas package

Packages are being put together for the children in the stores, and everyone who shops at Lidl can help by buying some groceries for the Christmas packages. Lidl puts a Christmas stollen in every package and, together with the Jeugdeducatiefonds, ensures that the Christmas packages reach the right people. Customers can also donate their deposit refunds to the charity.
