Lidl sells real champagne for next to nothing!

Nothing says festive more than a bottle of champagne! An added bonus: it barely gives you a hangover. Well, except financially, because that divine drink is never cheap. At least… almost never. Because these bubbles from Lidl really cost next to nothing!

Champagne Brut Reserve Comte de Brismand, Lidl €16.99
This champagne has been the star of Lidl’s range for years. During blind champagne tastings with my wine club, it always comes out as one of the winners, which is quite something among more than a hundred bottles, some of which cost ten times as much! And it doesn’t only stand out on our tasting table. Comte de Brismand frequently wins national and international awards. Already a great deal at this price, but now it’s on offer too: just €12.75 per bottle. My tip: stock up now and simply drink it throughout the year for that extra festive feeling.

Champagne Bissinger, Lidl €24.99
‘Champagne is the only drink that leaves a woman beautiful after drinking it’, said Madame de Pompadour, the famous mistress of King Louis XV, about her love of a glass of fizz. And with a bargain (literally and figuratively) like Bissinger, you can happily knock back a few glasses at Christmas and NYE without setting your credit card on fire. Go all out luxe; leave that greasy doughnut alone, because it’s a crying shame with a glass of champagne, and slurp down an oyster in style instead.

Made like champagne
Around 349 million bottles of champagne are produced every year—and the rules surrounding it are pretty strict. Champagne may only be called champagne if the bubbles come from the region of the same name. The method used to make champagne (Méthode Traditionelle) is, however, applied worldwide. It’s not called champagne there, but crémant (in France, outside Champagne), cava (Spain), sparkling wine (South Africa), the better Italian proseccos and even a German version: sekt (with the addition Flaschengärung). That’s why I’m also recommending a real champagne look-alike for next to nothing.
Crémant d’Alsace, Lidl €6.99
True story: several years ago, Lidl’s Crémant de Bourgogne was awarded a ‘Silver Outstanding’ award at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. This means that the sparkling wine received a score between 86 and 89.9. The same score went to the vintage champagne Veuve Clicquot 2008. A champagne that costs well over €50—do the math. At the time of writing, the Crémant de Bourgogne is out of stock, but the Crémant d’Alsace is available, at the same price.

Prosecco Organic DOP extra dry, Lidl €6.99
Celebrate on a budget: wine guide De Grote Hamersma rated this Italian bubbly an 8. ‘A delicious sparkling wine from Italy with a soft and fruity flavor. Extra dry, meaning that this prosecco isn’t too dry, but mildly dry. A lovely soft mousse (bubbles), making it very pleasant to drink. It’s also delicious with a green salad, for example with ripe pear, cheese and walnut. Enjoy it on many occasions!’ Another fun idea: use it to make these beautiful and delicious champagne cocktails or champagne macarons.
