Maldon (sea) salt gets a sleek new look!

maldon zout

Maldon, the quintessentially British salt brand from Essex that chefs around the world use as their go-to salt for the finishing touch before a dish leaves the kitchen, is launching a seriously beautiful rebrand of its packaging. It’s not available in the Netherlands just yet, but surely it can’t be long!

Whether you want to spend relatively much money on salt or not is entirely up to you, of course. You can read about the difference between cheap and expensive salt here, and this works best for me: a tin of simple table salt for everyday tasks such as salting the pasta water, but also for vinaigrette because it dissolves so quickly and easily, plus a pretty jar with a lid into which I’ve poured the Maldon salt. But the new packaging looks so cheerful that I might just leave it on the counter like that.

From Michelin-starred kitchens to your third-floor kitchen counter

Because the calm, chic white design with green and gold details is making way for a cheerful geometric pattern, which actually evokes Mediterranean life more than the cool British coastal landscape where the salt comes from the eponymous town.

No problem—both are appealing, and it’s a lovely step forward in the design of a salt box that was already found in the kitchens of British grandmothers. The Osborne family business has been making salt for four generations, and as mentioned, chefs of international renown as well as perfectly ordinary home cooks like you and me swear by it.

Smokey goodness

The smoked salt is also getting a lovely new look, moving from its neutral cardboard-colored box to the same geometric pattern as the ‘regular’ (let’s just call it that!) salt, but in shades of orange.

Smoked is delicious too!

Best salt ever

I really think this is such an exceptionally fine and delicious salt: you can gently crush the light pyramid-shaped crystals between your fingers and sprinkle your dish with flakes of different sizes. Sometimes you bite into a slightly larger piece, but the flavor is very mild, and it creates an interesting textural experience, even on such a small ‘scale’.

And if you’re truly a MEGA fan of this salt and don’t want to be without it at any time of day: you can even buy mini packages of it! With a 1-gram sachet in your bag, you can turn your filet américain sandwich at the station into a gourmet lunch, although you shouldn’t be surprised if someone shouts ‘salt snob’ at you very loudly, haha!

For the true addict…
