Man wins a minute of free shopping… And chooses just one product
Isn’t this the dream of many? A minute of free shopping. I always found it so exciting to watch on TV and would then fantasize endlessly. What would I take? As a teenager, it would definitely have been lots of crisps, nuts and sweets… But nowadays it would mainly be cleaning products and bottles of wine. Or meat, in the case of Jan Nijhuis. He won a minute of free shopping at Lidl in Oldenzaal.
Nijhuis was — understandably — over the moon with his prize. He had already taken the possibility of winning into account, because he had done his homework. Funny, meat would never occur to me as something to go for during a minute of free shopping. Why did Jan choose it?

‘Pick the small things with a high value. I had watched videos on YouTube showing how people go about their minute of free shopping. They mainly take meat and laundry detergent,’ Jan said. He took €468.40 worth of meat. Yep, almost €500 worth of meat. So what happened to the laundry detergent? ‘I couldn’t find it,’ Jan said. It turned out that Lidl had just moved its layouts and shelving. A shame, but Jan can still organise a great barbecue next spring.
What would you choose during a minute of free shopping?
As I wrote above, I would probably go for bottles of wine, beer and cleaning products. The first two because they keep for a long time and always come in handy, and the last because cleaning products are simply expensive. How useful would it be to have a year’s supply at home that you hadn’t spent a single euro on? So Jan’s tactic (small things with a high value) isn’t for me, but I am very curious about your tactics (and whether you may have won it yourselves?), perhaps I can still learn something from them.
