Ode to the Bifi Sausage

Today I want to talk about the most underrated snack in the country. A snack that has — completely undeservedly, if you ask me — gotten a bad name. Or well, gotten… Maybe it never had a good name in the first place. So unfair. Because there is no snack as spicy, as juicy, and above all as addictive as this one. The Bifi sausage. In other words, the ultimate guilty pleasure.

I can still clearly remember the moment I found out that not everyone likes this delicacy, and that some people even loathe it. I was lying on the sofa watching TV (just, as you do, in sweatpants) with a delicious Bifi sausage (the mini ones, because that way you can still pretend you have some self-control). All good, you might say, but that was without taking my housemate into account.
‘You really are such a man, aren’t you!’, she called out disapprovingly — apparently, eating Bifi sausages is generally not associated with feminine behavior.
So much more than just salami
The Bifi sausages I love so much call themselves ‘salami sausages’, by the way, but that really doesn’t do them justice. They are so much more. Wonderfully spicy, incredibly juicy, and every sausage leaves you wanting more. A mix of pork and beef, and it’ll surprise you to learn that they even contain coriander. Yaaah, and I’d put serious money on all those coriander haters happily wolfing down one of these sausages. Then you know you’re doing something right: when even those people (because it’s quite a large and outspoken group) can eat it.
At primary school, I did get away with my love for the Bifi sausage. My classmates completely understood how delicious this snack is. In fact, I was absolutely not the only one who showed up with a Bifi sausage every day. But at secondary school, I no longer dared try it. Even though they were available in our vending machines, I didn’t dare buy one.
Beyond the shame
But now. I’m over 30 and no longer ashamed so easily. Besides, even though I love culinary masterpieces and consider myself quite the foodie, some simple things simply deserve to be appreciated. Loetje steaks, for example. A Big Mac when you have the worst hangover ever (or when you simply feel like one). A HEMA hot dog with that delicious sauce. But above all: the Bifi sausage. So yes, here is my coming out: I love this sausage and everyone can know it!
