OH YES: Albert Heijn is now selling Kruidnootjes spread
We’ve found something new on the shelves at Albert Heijn for all lovers of crunchy kruidnootjes: Kruidnootjes spread! A smooth spread with crumbled kruidnoten. Irresistible on bread, crackers and waffles and, as we do in the editorial office: combined with banana.
We can already hear you thinking: wait a minute: isn’t this just the same as speculoos? The flavors are indeed quite similar, and if you want to save money, Speculoos spread (from the AH own brand) is a better choice (€1.89 per 400 g) than this new Kruidnootjes spread (€2.99 per 350 g).
Kruidnootjes spread: sugar/salt
But personally, I find the sugar/salt ratio tastier; the new Kruidnootjes spread contains slightly less added sugar (25 g per 100 g) and slightly more added salt (0.17 g per 100 g) compared with the Speculoos spread (31 g per 100 g and 0.13 g per 100 g).
Palm oil
There is one critical note to make: the Kruidnootjes spread is made with rapeseed and palm oil. Palm oil, a vegetable oil extracted from the fruits of the oil palm, is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world, but it does have a controversial reputation. Its production is associated with pollution and deforestation of tropical rainforests. Palm oil is found in roughly half of all supermarket products, by the way. In peanut butter, for example, palm oil ensures that the oil mixes with the rest, so that no layer of oil forms on top — something that some peanut butter lovers absolutely freak out about.
For people who really don’t want palm oil in their food, I’ll immediately recommend (in my humble opinion) the best chocolate spread in the world.
