Only in England: subsidized pub dining

To lend a helping hand to the struggling hospitality industry, people in Great Britain will be able to dine out at half price in the coming period. They will pay only half the cost of their meal; the government will cover the other half.

Last week, the government in London announced measures to encourage Britons to eat more healthily. No more television commercials for junk food, no more sweets at the checkout in supermarkets: all intended to promote a healthier lifestyle. Fortunately, dining out is still allowed, and the government is offering an attractive discount to promote visits to restaurants and pubs and give their revenues a bit of a boost.
There are limits, too
The government has attached a few conditions to the measure; this is not subsidized bingeing and stuffing your face. The offer is valid only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, only in August, alcohol is not discounted, and you can receive a maximum subsidy of ten pounds per person. Restaurants as well as pubs, canteens and bars can take part. More than 72,000 restaurants have already signed up, and the government estimates that the initiative will cost half a billion pounds.
