Pizza Hut’s new pizza is truly too bizarre for words

Some people already consider pineapple on their pizza a bizarre thing. But now there’s a pizza topping on the market that makes that miserable pineapple truly pale in comparison. Pizza Hut is serving pizza with… deep-fried frog.

Of all the strange pizza toppings in the world, this one really takes the cake.

A pizza with frog, please

Large pizza chains have listened to their customers’ wishes before. Domino’s once stopped putting pineapple on pizza, for example, because they were sick and tired of the endless debate about it. And that same chain understood very well that we in the Netherlands are collectively addicted to frikandels, so they came up with the Frikan’Dutchman: pizza with pieces of frikandel. But seriously… Can you imagine someone ever calling Pizza Hut and saying: when are you finally going to put deep-fried frog on your pizza?!

Creative collaboration

That rather strange request didn’t come from our own frog country either. Pizza Hut is launching the Goblin Pizza (that’s what this creative creation is called) in China. The frog pizza is part of a collaboration with Dungeon & Fighter: Origins, a popular mobile game. By the way, don’t think you can get away with avoiding the frog on this pizza. The little creature isn’t in small, unrecognizable pieces, but lies whole on the pizza. You just can’t see its color because of the fried coating around the frog. Two boiled eggs form the frog’s eyes. The animal is also served on a bed of cilantro. That will particularly disgust the cilantro haters.

In China, at least, they won’t find frog on your pizza all that strange. They also put spring onion in their coffee, remember?

Limited edition

Pizza Hut’s Goblin Pizza isn’t going to be around forever. Not because there’s no demand for it—there really are people who would enjoy this—but because it’s a limited edition pizza. You know, perhaps we should be a little more open-minded; maybe this really is delicious. In France, cuisses de grenouille, or frog legs, are simply a delicacy that people relish. Well…
