Italiaanse sandwich 1(1)

Dear Italy, are you holding up a little in these difficult times? We miss you so much and we’re thinking of you. And to put our money where our mouth is, we’re going to make a seriously substantial sandwich with all the delicious things you give us. XOXO, FavorFlav

This sandwich is filled with top Italian products such as mozzarella, pesto and (incomparable) mortadella, and while you’re standing over your frying pan and then peeking through your oven door, you can daydream about visions of rolling hills, blazing sunshine or snow-capped mountain peaks, aperitivi, pasta and wine, and hope that we’ll be able to go there again soon. Get the best quality of these ingredients that you can afford, and we think you’ll come closest to the true feeling of Italy.

How to make the Italian sandwiches

  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  • Heat half of the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
  • Place the bread in the pan and fry for about three minutes until golden brown on one side, moving it back and forth slightly as you do so.
  • Turn the bread over, add the remaining oil and fry this side until golden brown too.
  • Place the bread on a cutting board.
  • Spread the finely chopped anchovies over 2 of the 4 slices, distribute the mozzarella over them, followed by the pesto, artichokes and mortadella.
  • Place the other slices of bread on top, press gently and put them on a baking sheet.
  • Place in the hot oven for about 5 minutes, until the cheese has melted, then serve immediately.
  • Wipe away a tear for Italy, but do enjoy this sandwich.
