Rice and pasta big favorites among corona hoarders
People falling over each other to grab the last cans of vegetables, the last roll of toilet paper stolen from the staff restroom: hoarding seemed like a symptom of corona last year. A research agency compiled the figures on hoarding, and what do you know? Canned fish, rice and dried pasta were the ultimate hoarding purchases.
Research agency IRI made a top 10 of products that were heavily hoarded. Toilet paper only comes in at number five – bizarre, because the empty shelves of Popla and Page were surely the hot topic of conversation. IRI’s list is led by rice, followed by macaroni and spaghetti (probably: all types of pasta) and cans of fish. The highly coveted rolls are in fifth place. Also on the list: hand soap, long-life milk and frankfurters.
12.5 million rolls
Page director Allowin Aarden tells NOS that 12.5 million extra rolls of toilet paper were bought in the weeks after the first press conference. ‘That’s hundreds of trucks full,’ he says. ‘Absolutely enormous.’ And the hoarding wasn’t necessary, he emphasizes once again. There has always been enough stock. The director does understand why people nevertheless stood at the checkout with shopping carts full of toilet paper. ‘You see the neighbor come home with three large packs, and then you think: oh dear, will there be enough left for me?’
Fries, of course!
Major brands in particular benefited greatly from hoarding shoppers over the past year. Their sales increased by ten percent; Unox and Hak in particular were the big winners of the hoarding frenzy. Unox and Hak top the list, generating almost 17 million euros in additional sales, with Aviko (fries, of course!) in third place with 12 million euros more than in 2019.
Party nuts lose out
Not all food producers are clapping their hands over all that hoarding. Fewer peppermint candies, party nuts and beers were sold over the past year. Not surprising either: when you’re home alone, nobody is annoyed by your funky breath, those party nuts and beer belong at parties, and those have also been canceled.
