Rotterdammers come up with their own ‘Get lost with your Dubai bar’ chocolate
We’re not even close to 2025 yet, but the biggest food trend of 2024 is already known: the Dubai chocolate bar. This year, you can’t open TikTok without the bar popping up on your screen. A group of Rotterdam friends was fed up with the Dubai hype. ‘Get lost with your Dubai bar!’ someone shouted, inspiring Olaf Ouwerkerk to create a chocolate bar with the same name. That’s right: the Get lost with your Dubai bar.
For anyone who has been living under a rock: the Dubai bar is a chocolate bar filled with pistachio cream and kadayif. The latter consists of very thin, crispy strands of dough (a kind of angel hair) that are also used in künefe. The texture of these strands combined with the creamy, rich pistachio filling is divine. That much is certain. It’s no coincidence that the bar went viral on TikTok in no time after influencers first showed it to the world. You simply had to taste it.
The Dubai bar needs to get lost
Yes, the Dubai bar is delicious. But do we really need to keep talking about it since April? Olaf is part of the group of friends who thought the Dubai bar needed to get lost. When the group was sitting on a terrace, the bar came up in conversation. The conclusion: enough was enough with that thing. ‘‘In Rotterdam, we just eat our own Rotterdam chocolate anyway,’’ one of Olaf’s friends told him (Havenloods interview). Olaf’s conclusion: he was going to make his own Rotterdam Dubai bar. Get lost with your Dubai bar, just keep it nice and normal and stay in Rotterdam!
Rotterdam glory in a bar
A chocolate factory in the Rotterdam region thought Olaf’s idea was pretty funny. Together, they developed a 225-gram Rotterdam Pistachio Bar made from Belgian white chocolate and filled with pistachio filling, kadayif and vanilla cream. What makes it Rotterdam-style, besides the fact that it was made by a true Rotterdam entrepreneur? The colors of the Rotterdam flag: green, white and green. They are incorporated into the chocolate shell. And when you break open the bar, they emerge in all their glory. A real piece of Rotterdam, then. Dubai can’t compete with that, right?
