Shocking: 500 kg of cocaine found in coffee beans for Nespresso

Yes, we all know that a few espressos can give you quite a buzz. But this is a particularly wild bouncing story: 500 kg of cocaine has been found in coffee beans for Nespresso.

When employees at the Nespresso factory in Romont, in the Swiss canton of Fribourg, opened the bags of coffee beans that had just been delivered from Brazil, they found more than 500 kilos of a substance that apparently also keeps you wide awake.

Worth tens of millions of euros

This was, in fact, an incredibly large shipment of cocaine. According to Nespresso, the police were informed immediately after the suspicious substance was discovered. Following an investigation, they stated that the shipment had a market value of around fifty million euros. The police also said that the drugs were packaged separately and did not come into direct contact with the coffee or any part of the production process.

Safety guaranteed

Nespresso says that all its products are safe for consumption and that very strict quality controls are in place for all incoming shipments of unroasted coffee beans. The company also says that it cannot make any further statements at this time, as the police investigation is still in full swing. So what else?—there is no clear answer to that just yet.
