For just 74 cents, because it’s currently on sale, you can wolf down Lidl’s sauerkraut-smoked sausage pastry. Instagram phenomenon Snackspert, better known as Eke Bosman when he’s not covered in mayonnaise, shares his verdict.

A crispy puff pastry filled with smoked sausage and sauerkraut, and that for the – regular price – of 0.99 cents apiece, is practically free. And honestly: it’s a snack that smiles at you from the bakery shelf. ‘Take me, take me!’, it seems to shout. ‘You had me with the price’, we almost want to shout back, because for 0.74 cents – you’re currently getting 25% off Lidl’s sauerkraut-smoked sausage pastry – how could you possibly leave this lying around?

Flexible backbone

We certainly couldn’t, because our backbone is, especially when it comes to snacks, even more flexible than a smoked sausage. And the same goes for our Snackspert. He gladly tasted it for you.

Sauerkraut-smoked sausage pastry test

A Lidl sauerkraut-smoked sausage pastry, well, well! And compared with the one from the big blue competitor whose name rhymes with Kwalbert Pijn, this one looks much more appealing. But the taste is better too: the balance between sauerkraut, mustard and meat is spot-on here. The only downside is the pastry, which is too firm and too thick, making it seem as though you first need to hire a few handymen before you can reach the meat. One other thing: the sausage is just as thin as a small frikandel. I don’t really think that suits a smoked sausage. So yes, a perfectly decent taste, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. ⭐️⭐️½
