Snackspert: ‘The pork belly fries are worth the detour’

Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, known in mayonnaise as Eke Bosman, shares his delicious experience in Ermelo this week. At Snackbar ‘t Speuldje in Speuld, winner of the ‘Best Cafeteria in the Netherlands’ competition, he ate an insanely delicious portion of pork belly fries.

Loaded fries are always a good idea. When we make rendang, we always save some for the next day: then we turn it into rendang fries. Another hit here in the editorial office (well, among some of us…): Brussels sprout fries. Zoervleisj on fries is the ultimate dish for stew lovers; in Limburg they call it ‘frietje zuurvlees’ (or zoervleisj), in Belgium ‘friet met stoof’, and in Canada ‘poutine’.
Off to Ermelo
Speaking of ‘fries with benefits’… in Ermelo, at Snackbar ‘t Speuldje, you can get pork belly fries. Incredibly delicious and an even better deal on Wednesdays: then you pay €10 instead of €13.50 for a portion.
Pork belly fries
No, this isn’t shawarma, no no, this is pork belly. And pork belly fries are a dish that’s widely available around Ermelo (and probably in more places in the Netherlands, but this part of Gelderland really stood out to me when it comes to the love of pork belly). I visited Snackbar ‘t Speuldje in Speuld, winner of the ‘Best Cafeteria in the Netherlands’ competition. Now, such prizes are usually of limited significance, because not nearly all snack bars are tested in these competitions. But! It bodes well. And thankfully, it did: the fries with pork belly, mayo, curry and onions (not visible, but underneath the pieces of pork belly) were absolutely delicious. The pieces are deep-fried, so it isn’t such a soggy mess (a bit like how Top Oss played yesterday, you know. You don’t want that). On the other hand, that’s also a tiny downside, because some pieces were too dry. You can never get it quite right, can you? Anyway, the fries were fried to perfection, the sauce was delicious—in other words: this is worth the detour. Really lovely cafeteria. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
