Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, Snackspert tells us, among other things, what he thinks of Albert Heijn’s new frikandel roll.

New vegan frikandel roll, Albert Heijn

vegan frikandel roll Albert Heijn

There’s a new vegan frikandel roll at Albert Heijn! And if you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know by now that I’ve never been a fan of a vegetarian or vegan frikandel. The reason is simple: they still haven’t made a good one that actually resembles the regular version. But boys and girls and people who identify differently, there’s hope on the horizon. This vegan frikandel roll is genuinely tasty. No, seriously, this is no joke—it’s not as if I’m suddenly going to write GEPRANKED at the end of this review, no, no, it’s really true. The pastry isn’t too thick or too dry, partly because of the relatively generous amount of semi-dried curry sauce. Deliciously messy, just like a frikandel roll should be. As a result, the slightly unpleasant soy flavor of the vegan frikandel fades into the background, making the experience of eating a frikandel roll just as enjoyable as, well, you can fill in the blank yourself. There is, however, one major drawback: the size. Come on, this is almost half the size of a regular frikandel. Size does matter, especially when it comes to frikandellen, so I’m still calling on Appie to do something about this. Because I was still hungry after eating it. But all right, it’s still tasty. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HEY!Pannenkoek, Amersfoort Vathorst

HEY!Pannenkoek

Let’s do something crazy for once. Sure, you can eat a pancake with cheese and bacon, but why not just order a hamburger pancake? I’m a fan of wild pancakes anyway; years and years ago, I reviewed the shawarma pancake, and honestly, it was just as crazy as that mad girl on the dance floor after three shots of tequila. At HEY!Pannenkoek in Amersfoort Vathorst, you can find the most bizarre pancakes you’ll have come across in a long time. Also, and this is not entirely unimportant: it’s a lovely place to sit with your children, which is ideal for someone with an enthusiastic one-year-old daughter. Anyway. The hamburger pancake wasn’t exactly a taste sensation, but once rolled up, it was delicious dipped in mayonnaise and tomato ketchup. Just good old-fashioned snacking, you know. The meat was perfectly okay, though the watery tomatoes were unnecessary; the onions made up for a lot. A decent pancake, that’s all. I’ll be back soon to try the rest of the menu. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Spareribs Eetcafé van Beeren, Amsterdam

spareribs from Eetcafé van Beeren

Well, hey! This review had been sitting on the shelf for a loooong time! The spareribs from Eetcafé van Beeren in Amsterdam. Mmm. And if the spareribs fall off the bone as easily as an average soccer player goes down after not being touched by a defender, then you know you’re in good hands. Van Beeren’s spareribs are seriously good. The meat is tender, with a deliciously dark flavor supported by the garlic sauce—mmm. I ordered the large portion, which I just couldn’t quite finish. Another good sign for the meat lovers among us. Compared with Pendergast, this is a somewhat simpler (but still incredibly good) version of spareribs, while on the other hand, it isn’t as bare-bones and pornographic as De Klos. It sits exactly in between, you know. Delicious. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
