Better than pleasure

Cheese dosa at Saravanaa Bhavan, Amsterdam

Is this a snack? Yes, maybe, but when is something a snack? For me, it’s often just a matter of gut feeling. I usually say: do you eat it with coffee? If not, then it’s a snack. But then again, that claim isn’t exactly watertight either. Now that I’ve said this, I can safely continue with this review, because the cheese dosa from Saravanaa Bhavan in Amsterdam may or may not be a snack. But that doesn’t matter, because it is insanely, unbelievably, incredibly delicious, and I still think about it every day. It’s genuinely dangerous; if you’ve just started dating a really lovely girl/boy, there’s a chance you’ll no longer dream about him/her, but about this cheese dosa instead. It looks thin, but this fried snack is bigger than the head of someone with a mega-big head, you know. The cheese reminds you of the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich ever, so I’d like to say: go to Saravanaa Bhavan in Amsterdam, have the night of your life, and order this 4 times. Okay? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Albert Heijn croquette roll

I once had the croquette roll at Jumbo, and it was such a massive disappointment that I subsequently avoided croquette rolls like the plague. It’s like giving your phone to someone and then they discover that you’ve been listening to Marco Borsato on Spotify for days. Yeah, then you never want to see that person again either, you know. But when I was at Appie recently and saw a new croquette roll on the shelves, I decided to give it a second chance after all. Because, well, characters in Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden get 64 chances, so I might as well try the croquette roll again. But this time from Albert Heijn. The verdict? Pret-ty good. The dough is much better and reminds you of the lovely dough of the frikandel roll. The croquette is nice and crispy, well-filled, and there’s certainly nothing to complain about there. And the sauce? That could be much better. A small layer of mustard has been spread underneath the croquette, and they could really be more generous with it. A bit like the frikandel roll, which comes with curry sauce, you know. Albert Heijn, you’re almost there; just keep going a little longer and you’ll have a perfectly decent croquette roll. Keep it up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Frikandel XL at Snackbar Hans, Hilversum

Apparently, at Radio 538 it’s a fact that Snackshop Hans in Hilversum is a terrible place, but let’s be kind to one another, because I got a good feeling about this place as soon as I walked in. That feeling was immediately confirmed: they actually have the frikandel XL here! Not to be confused with the XXL, because this one is a few centimetres shorter. But hey, I’m happy to have a stick longer than the national average in my mouth, and bet you’re thinking now: same here. Add a little portion of fries, a cheese soufflé to soothe the throat: fine. The fries could have used a bit more flavour in my opinion, because they reminded me more of fried air. The cheese soufflé is really quite good and moves on to the next round, but unfortunately the frikandel XL is disappointing. I don’t know what causes it, but I find it far too sweet. The mayonnaise doesn’t save the situation, unfortunately, so I think something went wrong in the fryer. A disappointing frikandel isn’t something you come across often, but hey, not every one night stand is successful. That’s life, folks. ⭐️⭐️
