Snackspert’s week: ‘This is one of the most disappointing sausages you’ll ever put in your mouth’

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there’s more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Seriously heavenly
Patatas bravas from Havana, The Hague
Admit it: this is the most beautiful dollop of sauce you’ve ever seen, right? What you’re looking at isn’t the result of a wonderful euphoric moment, but Havana’s patatas bravas with aioli and spicy tomato sauce in The Hague! Not a place I’d immediately expect to serve top snacks, but I was wrong. Because it’s delicious. I would have left the fried potatoes in the basket for another minute, but in terms of flavor, it’s completely on point. The aioli reminds me of the better aioli you get in Spain, which is a good sign, although the spicy tomato sauce could be a little hotter in my opinion. But I can’t complain, because I genuinely enjoyed it. Lovely on the terrace (yes, god, now the weather is really perfect for it, you idiot), with a beer on the side—there you go. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chili & lime chips from Lay’s

Sometimes you come across products that immediately make you think: yes, come here, baby/darling, I’m going to devour you completely, you delicious little thing, yum yum—and I have to admit that’s exactly how I feel about these chips, which I bought in Germany. Come to the Netherlands soon. Lay’s “strong” chips with chili and lime flavor are honestly not that spicy, but that combination of chili and lime in a chip: wow. Delicious. You taste a layer of lime that, thankfully, doesn’t come through too strongly, because it’s overpowered by the mild chili. Lay’s, though, I don’t understand why you put ‘perfect with beer’ on the package, because I could easily drink these with other beverages too. They’re simply very tasty chips, period. Come to the Netherlands, baby/darling. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Food for the trash
Vegetable hot dog from HEMA, Amsterdam Osdorp

I’ve been asked several times to test HEMA’s vegetable hot dog. But it turns out it still isn’t available everywhere. Bummer, because of course I want to stay current and keep you up to date on the latest snack developments. It’s like only saying in September 2019 how good FIFA 18 is, right? Just a little embarrassing. Anyway, hey, I finally found it. Thankfully, the vegetable hot dog was available at HEMA in Amsterdam Osdorp, and the meat version once received 5 stars from me, so expectations are high. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most disappointing sausages you’ll ever put in your mouth. Yes, the baguette is tasty, and even in the vegan version the sauce is heavenly, but the ‘sausage’, consisting of 9 vegetables—correct me if I’m wrong—is really not good. It simply doesn’t taste like anything. Not like a sausage, and not like a snack either. As if the vegetables were fried for too long and are now mainly stale. Don’t call me a vegan hater—quite the opposite, because the vegetarian hot dogs from the Vegetarische Slager, for example, are actually great. HEMA gambled and lost this time. You can do better! ⭐️⭐️
