Thirsty tales

‘Snow coffee’ by Reese Witherspoon goes viral on TikTok: genius or absolutely disgusting?

TikTok is a platform that makes you stare in disbelief. From eating bright green toothpicks to extremely sour candy challenges: we’ve seen it all. People are now up in arms over a TikTok video by Reese Witherspoon. In the video, she shows how she makes coffee from… snow. And then eats it.

No, it’s not that Reese pours snow into her coffee maker. What does she do in the video? She grabs a mug and fills it with snow. She scrapes the snow off the windows of her car, which are completely covered in a white layer. Then she swirls  chocolate and salted caramel syrup over the snow in the mug. Finally, she pours some cold brew  from a kind of large box with a tap, to give the snow a delicious coffee flavor. And tadaaa, her so-called Snow Salt Chocochino is ready.

Nightmare vs. childhood dream

It could easily be on the Starbucks menu. Reese loves it. Many of her followers don’t, which we enjoy immensely. ‘I’ve never eaten snow and I’m not going to start now’, ‘As a West European, I am in shock’ and ‘Uhm, is this actually safe to eat?’ are just some of the reactions. But not everyone is negative. Quite a few TikTokers are reminded of their childhood too. Comments like ‘We always ate snow ice when we were little and I’m still alive’ and ‘I really did this all the time as a child’ keep popping up.

If you melt snow in the microwave, you can see what kind of dirt remains in the water. Reese got that tip from one of her followers. In a new video, the actress follows the tip. If we are to believe her, there wasn’t a single speck of dirt to be found in the melted snow. So Reese can continue making snow coffees to her heart’s content.

Don’t eat the yellow snow

Of course, eating snow once isn’t harmful. Knock yourself out. You do you. Live your best life. But still… It doesn’t sound very fresh (and is it just me, or does Reese look absolutely maniacal?). If you’re too curious: only grab some fresh snow. Snow that’s been lying around for a few days has become too much of a source of bacteria. And an obvious one… Don’t eat the yellow snow.
