Everyone knows someone who orders something just a little different in a restaurant. But some orders really take the cake. Take these hilarious and bizarre examples of strange orders people place in restaurants. Sometimes, as a member of the serving staff, you really wonder whether someone is taking the piss…
Funny restaurant orders; everyone who works or has worked in hospitality knows them. It’s almost impossible to believe, but some customers really do have a very particular taste… or simply a lot of imagination…
Strange restaurant orders: how do people even come up with them?!
1. Spring onion sandwich
Mandy: ‘I once had a guest ask for a spelt roll to be hollowed out and filled with nothing but spring onion.’
2. Cold fries
Daniëlle: ‘We all know people who complain about cold fries. But this customer actually wanted them cold. He asked me to fry the fries, put them in the fridge and then serve them. When he got them, he said: “Exactly how my grandmother used to make them.” Strange request, but sweet.’
3. No rare meat
Emma: ‘Customer: I don’t like rare meat, so make the steak well-done and have carpaccio as a starter.’
4. Decaf?!
Kim: ‘The guest thought the ‘DE’ in decaf stood for Douwe Egberts. He didn’t understand at all when he got Lavazza, and I didn’t understand his question either. We laughed about it with our colleagues many times afterwards!’
5. Naked pizza
Jim: ‘A customer once ordered a Margherita pizza, but without sauce, without cheese and without herbs. What was left? A bare pizza base. The chef couldn’t hold back his laughter when I passed on the order, but the customer said: “Perfect, exactly what I wanted.”
6. Chicken lips
Herma: ‘A guest ordered: roasted, marinated, filleted chicken lips…. but if they looked like mine, they could also be raw.’
7. Hamburger without… hamburger
Stella: ‘This really happened. I worked at a burger restaurant and a customer ordered a hamburger, but wanted the burger without the bun, without sauce, without vegetables and without meat. When I asked what exactly he wanted, he replied: “Just the smell of a hamburger.” After checking with my chef, I took him into the kitchen for a moment. It smelled incredibly much like hamburger in there. He left a five-euro tip and walked out the door happily, leaving us in complete amazement.’
8. Ice-cube dessert
Pia: ‘When I brought over the dessert menu, the customer said: “Just a bowl of ice cubes. I’m on a diet, and they’re nice and crunchy.”‘
9. Flat cola
Patrick: ‘A customer asked for a cola, but without the fizz. I added sugar and hot water and stirred it for minutes to get the bubbles out. When I served the glass, he said: “Perfect, now I can enjoy it without that fizz up my nose.”‘
10. Fish soup without fish
Manon: ‘A customer ordered fish soup, but asked whether the chef could leave out the fish. Very strange. But he really wanted it: fish soup without fish. The kitchen then made a vegetable soup, but that wasn’t what he meant. He wanted the water in which the fish would have been cooked, but without the fish. The chef then cooked fish in water and received a generous tip.’
