Taste test: new ham pinsa from Lidl’s Deluxe range

Pinsa Lidl 2

We absolutely love Lidl’s Deluxe range. Top quality at a wonderfully affordable price: that makes everyone happy, right? During my last supermarket trip, I came across a new Deluxe product: the ham pinsa. It already looked so good on the packaging that I couldn’t do anything other than subject myself to a taste test.

What a dreadful job I have.

Focaccia-style base

For anyone scratching their head at the word pinsa: it’s somewhere between a pizza and a focaccia. The packaging of the Lidl pinsa says ‘focaccia-style base’. Pinsa dough is indeed more similar to focaccia dough than pizza dough. Pinsa dough contains several types of flour, is wetter and rises for longer compared with pizza dough. The Lidl pinsa, for example, contains wheat flour, rice flour and rye flour. Pizza dough often contains only wheat flour. In terms of the amount of toppings, however, a pinsa is more similar to a pizza than to a focaccia.

Lidl pinsa: the verdict

So, pinsa. Dr. Oetker previously added the oval, Tuscan version of the pizza to its range. We were absolutely thrilled with it. How does Lidl’s Deluxe ham pinsa fare? Incredibly well, I can tell you. Holy shit, it’s delicious. The base is light and incredibly crispy at the same time: exactly how you want it. The pinsa itself is generously topped. I mean it—the packaging isn’t lying. Just as you see it on the cardboard box, that’s how it comes out of your oven. The combination of mozzarella, ham and mushrooms is a classic, but one that works. Rings of olives, pieces of spring onion and grated Grana Padano finish off the pinsa. Nice work, Lidl!

Pinsa Lidl 3

This will be the star of your drinks party. I ate it simply ‘for dinner’, because why not? You can pick up Lidl’s new ham pinsa for €3.49. I haven’t spotted a vegetarian version yet, but who knows—maybe Lidl is reading this.
