Say pizza, and you say Italy. And say Italy, and you say pizza. Right? When it comes to pizza, Italy dominates the world. Yet it doesn’t dominate the global Top 50 Best Artisanal Pizza Chains. No, for that, it has to give up the number 1 spot to… Spain.

Would you like to visit a pizza chain where you can eat the very best artisanal pizzas in the world? Then you’ll have to book a ticket to Spain. At the Grosso Napoletano chain, they bake the very, very, very best pizzas using traditional methods. At least, if we are to believe the Top 50 Pizza Awards. Remarkably, this is an award organized in Italy.

Grosso Napoletano

Best artisanal pizza chain in the world

Grosso Napoletano has no fewer than 40 locations throughout Spain, including 4 in Barcelona. Why does this Spanish chain win the gold medal? Grosso Napoletano knows how to bring the taste and quality of real Neapolitan pizza to Spain. The ingredients are of the highest quality. They source the flour all the way from Naples, for example. In addition, the chefs make the pizzas themselves from A to Z and bake them in traditional stone ovens. Add the friendly and knowledgeable service (also important for a chain), and you understand why Grosso Napoletano tops the list.

Still the most dominant: Italy

If you look at the rest of the top 10, you won’t find any other Spanish chains there. You will find French, Brazilian, Australian and Swiss chains, though. And… Italian ones. No fewer than 4 Italian artisanal pizza chains appear in the top 10, including one in second place. Okay, I take back what I said. Italy still dominates this list after all.

This is the top 10 of the Top 50 Best Artisanal Pizza Chains in the World 2023:

  1. Grosso Napolentano, Spain
  2. Da Michele, Italy
  3. Big Mamma Group, France
  4. Bráz Pizzeria, Brazil
  5. Berberè, Italy
  6. 400 Gradi, Australia
  7. Pizzium, Italy
  8. Errico Porzio, Italy
  9. Luigia, Switzerland
  10. Pepe Pizzeria, France

Can’t a pizza trip abroad happen just yet? Don’t worry, you can also find fantastic pizza in plenty of places closer to home. Or become a pizzaiolo yourself. With this ingredient, for example, you can make an unbelievably good pizza sauce. Avoid these 4 mistakes and you’ll take a star-quality pizza out of your oven. That number-one spot in the top 50? It’s yours next year!
