That’s a shock: this vegetable is bizarrely huge

Groente-hoofd-Favorflav

A carrot the size of a forearm. Cabbage that won’t fit in your trunk, but has to be taken home in a pickup truck. Strawberries as big as an apple. And apples as big as a melon. Mother Nature really goes all out sometimes, resulting in these enormous vegetables and fruits.

Could your home vegetable garden use a bit more powerrr too? It’s not a matter of chance, or simply watering the cress regularly. According to gardening website The Spruce, you need to think about good soil, the perfect location and, above all: expertise. Is all that in order? Then you can expect peppers weighing a pound or more, watermelons weighing 50 kilos or more, and gigantic onions.

Oddities

Usually, those outlandish vegetables don’t end up in the supermarket. Supermarkets prefer cucumbers that are all the same size, weight and perfectly straight. Easier to package, easier to sell. Still, you sometimes get lucky: a mandarin with a mini mandarin inside, an unbelievably large onion or a gigantic clove of garlic. Rest assured: giant vegetables are perfectly edible – you’ll simply be able to cook for a few more people.
