It feels like an annual recurring topic on FavorFlav: the hospitality industry is getting more expensive. You pay more for a beer, sitting on a terrace takes a big bite out of your salary and yes, these days you also have to dig deep into your pockets for a trip to the snack bar. This is also evident from RTL Z’s frikandel index. You’d be genuinely shocked by how much you now have to pay for a simple frikandel…
The frikandel is a snack we never have to worry about disappearing from the snack bar. It’s everyone’s favorite, right? Whether you like the ‘plain’ version or prefer a special frikandel with all the trimmings. Countless creative dishes featuring the frikandel have now been invented. From the Frikandellington to Frikandelli Bolognese, and from frikandel quiche to olie-del. You can get as crazy as you like with a ‘delleke’, but honestly: is there anything better than a piping-hot frikandel straight from the deep fryer at your local snack bar?
The frikandel: a luxury snack
Our love for frikandellen has existed for as long as the snack itself. Even 25 years ago, people were enthusiastically throwing the snack into the fryer. Those were the days. Because back then, a frikandel was still very affordable. These days, it feels as though you’re buying a solid gold bar instead of a brown meat stick… (It does sound a lot less appealing that way, I admit). The frikandel index, created by news channel RTL Z, shows how large the price difference is between now and 25 years ago.
This is how expensive a frikandel is these days
Curious? Here it comes: 25 years ago, the average income was € 24,958. Nearly € 25,000, in other words. That’s a big difference from today’s average income: € 46,500. But back then, around the year 2000, you could buy far more frikandellen for your money than you can now. Twenty-five years ago, a frikandel cost 89 euro cents. Now you pay—hold on tight—an average of € 2.55. That means that if you spent your entire annual salary on snack-bar frikandellen in 2000, you would have got 28,042 frikandellen for it. Now that figure is… 18,235. A difference of around 10,000 frikandellen. Holy shit.
A life without a little frikandel?!
We’re afraid things won’t get better for us anytime soon. These days, the hospitality industry is struggling with, among other things, enormous staffing costs. But really, what is the alternative? Nobody wants a life without frikandellen, right? Then we’ll just have to open an extra snack-bar fund in our savings account!
