These 15 portions in the US prove that obesity makes sense here… (part 3)

Just act normal, and you’re already being crazy enough. For many Dutch people, that’s the moral of their life story. When it comes to food, we also prefer not to go too crazy around here. In general, we eat fairly healthily—and certainly not (far too) much. Small portions are even a hit here. Well, that trend definitely won’t be making its way to the other side of the Atlantic. Just look at those ENORMOUS portions…

Well, then it’s hardly surprising that obesity is such a gigantic problem there. Did you know that no less than 68% of Americans are overweight? 68 percent! That’s almost three-quarters of the population. Too bizarre for words, right? During my trip through North America, I experienced the unhealthy food culture for myself. And I can only shake my head and admit: it’s true. The food there is fatty, sugar-laden and, above all, served in gigantic portions. Coke at McDonald’s came by the liter—with unlimited refills —and burgers nearly reached the ceiling. Sure, you can go to that super healthy food bar where all the trendy fit girls get their vitamin shakes. But you’ll pay at least three times as much there as you would for a Coke at McDonald’s. Right, you get the problem.

That doesn’t change the fact that those bizarrely large, unhealthy portions make for some pretty great pictures. Just take a look at the 15 portions below. You won’t believe your eyes.

Healthy junk food? Yes please

We can beat around the bush all we want, but unhealthy food is often just incredibly delicious. If it didn’t make you gain weight, we’d stuff ourselves with it all day long. My biggest wish: for junk food to become healthy. But I’ll probably be waiting until pigs fly. Fortunately, more and more healthy junk food concepts are appearing. So we can still snack deliciously without feeling guilty. And otherwise, we also have some recipes for comfort food and desserts that won’t make you super fat. Now that’s what makes us deliciously happy.
