These 15 Portions in the US Prove That Obesity Makes Sense Here… (Part 2)

In America, food standards are rather… different from those in our little frog country. For example, Americans eat incredibly fast. In fact, no nation eats as fast as the Americans. The concept of ‘fast food’ did not originate across the Atlantic for nothing. Order, gobble it down, order some more and leave again – that’s how they roll. Another thing: they love sugar and fat. Yes, we also love some fries and a good slice of cake, but in America unhealthy food is genuinely baked into the culture. Why do you think the aisle with American products is also called the diabetes aisle? And one more thing that stands out about food in America: the portions are ENORMOUS.

Why are those American portions so large?

And I mean really enormous. You almost wonder how it is possible for such a portion to fit in a human stomach. You could make one gigantic slice of pizza last a week, if you ask me! Why do those portions have to be so ridiculously large over there in America? It goes back to a way of thinking from the distant past. Long ago, many immigrants came to the US who had suffered severe hunger in their countries of origin. ‘Never again!’ they cried. And so it came to pass, because from then on the portions were made extremely large. That never changed, even though there is no longer any famine. Quite the opposite, in fact. Now there has been another major problem on the agenda (for years): obesity.

Big and cheap

Getting rid of that obesity problem is not so easy. Calorie-dense food is simply incredibly cheap in America. Much cheaper than healthy food. I can confirm this: when I did my grocery shopping at Walmart during my time as a student in North America, apples, tomatoes and whole-wheat bread were almost unaffordable. Everything in packets and cans – packed with sugar and fat – was cheap. So it makes sense that people who have to live on a budget go for cheap and easy options. But you do pay a different price for that.

15 bizarrely large American obesity portions

Half oceans of cola, buckets of fries, pizzas as large as UFOs and burgers taller than the Empire State Building—you really have to see it for yourself when you fly over there. No trip to America planned? Don’t worry, there is more than enough bizarre imagery of extremely large American obesity portions. We already collected some of them in part 1; today, we continue with part 2.

Recipes for American food lovers

Are you secretly drooling behind your screen right now? So are we. Okay, those enormous portions are excessive, but nobody regrets a tasty burger or some fries every once in a while. Right? For anyone who wants to do it the American way tonight, we have a few divine recipes in the archive. How about a cheesy cheeseburger with a cheese soufflé in the middle? America meets Holland, you could say. Another winner that gives you the best of 2 (even 3!) worlds: loaded fries with tortilla chips and frikandel. And for dessert, make these red wine milkshakes. Tonight will be a deliciously American feast.
