These 9 kitchen hacks are also complete nonsense

So you think you’re doing the right thing, only to find out that all those handy tricks are nonsense. Or did you really think that cutting a wet onion would stop you from getting teary-eyed? And that you can make powdered sugar yourself? And that you have to wash chicken before eating it?

Holding onions underwater means no tears
How can you prevent yourself from crying your eyes out when cutting onions? By briefly holding the onion underwater. It would be nice if it were true, but unfortunately, putting an onion in a little bath doesn’t result in fewer tears. A sharp kitchen knife does, by the way, so sharpen your knife again and wear waterproof mascara.
Pancake batter from a ketchup bottle
Much easier than using a ladle: pour the pancake batter into the frying pan with a recycled ketchup bottle. Erm… Most ketchup bottles are too rigid and the opening isn’t large enough for thick batter. You can buy bottles with a large opening at cookware stores, which you can use to squeeze poffertjes and pancake batter into the pan.
A wooden spoon to prevent overflowing
Place a wooden spoon across a pan when cooking potatoes or rice. The wooden spoon will stop the water from boiling over. Unfortunately, that’s not true: the wooden spoon may provide a little delay, giving you just enough time to turn down the heat, but a wooden spoon can’t completely prevent the pan from boiling over.
Putting a spoon in the handle
The hole in the handle of your frying pan or saucepan is meant for: placing your wooden spoon in it while you’re cooking. But is it useful? Meh, not really: those spoons fall straight through with ease.
Powdered sugar is ground granulated sugar
You’re baking and you’ve run out of powdered sugar. No problem: grind the sugar in a food processor and you’ll have powdered sugar in no time! Most food processors can’t actually do that, though, so there’s a good chance the sugar will still be too coarse. Not good for your bake, so just buy a jar of powdered sugar for a few cents.
Rinse the pasta so it doesn’t stick
No, no, no! If you rinse the pasta after cooking, you wash away extra starch, which is precisely what you need to help bind the pasta sauce and make it cling to your spaghetti or macaroni. So never do this again! If your pasta sticks together, it’s probably either overcooked or cooked in a pan that’s too small.
Bread stays fresh in the refrigerator
Your bread won’t get moldy in the refrigerator, but it will dry out faster and therefore go stale quickly. So unless you want to make grilled cheese sandwiches, it’s better to keep bread at room temperature and eat your fresh bread quickly.
Wash the bacteria off the chicken
Wash chicken or not? When you cook the chicken, the bacteria are already rendered harmless. And if you wash chicken in the sink, you’ll just splash those bacteria all over your kitchen.
Seeds from the chili
Remove the seeds from the chili pepper and it will be less hot. Well, that’s not quite right. It’s mainly those white membranes in the chili, to which the seeds are attached, that are incredibly spicy. Just use a little less pepper, and you won’t have to fiddle around with seeds or white membranes.
