These are the best ready-made pancakes from the supermarket

pannenkoeken

Everyone enjoys a pancake every now and then. (It really is true: did you know that one in three Dutch people eats pancakes at least once a month?! Quite a lot, right?) Of course, fresh and homemade is best. But sometimes it’s a lot of work, your whole house smells and things don’t always turn out right. The solution (apart from a pancake maker): ready-made pancakes. AD tested which ready-made pancake from the supermarket tastes best.

I’ll tell you right away: the answer is going to surprise you. I had certainly never heard of this brand before. What a disgrace!

Pancake experts

The jury consisted of a few professionals from the pancake world: pancake expert and owner of Theehuis Rhijnauwen Jesse Blijde, floor manager at vandemeester.com Elout van Staveren and chef at Statencafé Rohini Atwaroe. Rohini also baked the Tastiest Pancake of 2023. Naturally, I immediately looked up what kind of pancake it was: American pancakes with ‘blueberries, maple syrup infused with lavender, beurre noisette, whiskey maple glazed bacon strips and orange zest’. Oh my God. With a masterpiece like that, I’ll blindly trust anything she has to say about pancakes.

Sandpaper

Ready-made pancakes don’t have the best reputation. In their plastic packaging, they don’t look particularly appealing. Somehow, I believe they are bone-dry and incredibly soggy at the same time. The dryness certainly becomes apparent quickly in the test: according to the jury, some ready-made pancakes are practically ‘sandpaper’. Looking at the jury report, that could easily refer to the AH and Plus own-brand pancakes. The former receives a 5, the latter even a 4. So these supermarkets could certainly benefit from a refresher course in making good ready-made pancakes.

Who gets to teach that refresher course? The brand Crêapan. A Flemish manufacturer that is—in fact—the winner of this Dutch pancake taste test. The jury calls the Crêapan pancakes ‘succulent’, ‘sweet enough’, ‘well baked’ and ‘attractive to look at’. Now that’s how we like them! That’s why Crêapan receives a solid 9 from the panel.

Crêapan pancakes are available at Jumbo. A 600-gram pack (10 pieces) costs around €1.99 there. Why would you make them yourself?!
