These bakers make the best Easter breads in the Netherlands

FavorFlav’s Sabina noticed it this weekend: all the flour at Albert Heijn was sold out. The chances are that all the home bakers have started stockpiling. So there is nothing else for it: this year, we’re going to the baker’s for our Easter bread. More specifically: to one of these three bakers, because they sell the best Easter bread in the Netherlands.

Yes, people: besides the award for tastiest spareribs and best grill sausage, every year we also eagerly look forward to the award for best Easter bread. Over the past few weeks, all Echte Bakkers could submit their Easter bread in the required loaf shape for this competition. A total of 75 Echte Bakkers took part, each getting the chance to submit a loaf twice. The 9 Echte Bakkers that scored 8.1 or higher made it to the final.
Taste and eating qualities
For the final judging, the Easter breads were purchased unannounced from the shops. This year, the focus was even more on taste and eating qualities. The breads were first assessed on these aspects, and only then was the appearance of the loaf as a whole considered. And naturally, the judging was done by true experts from the field: judge Ton Deegenaars of Royal Steensma, technical adviser Marco van Scheijndel of Puratos, and Hans Som, foreman and team coach of the Boulangerieteam.
Martin Nijkamp: there he is again!
Nijkamp, De Echte Bakker, with shops in Holten and Zutphen, is the winner of the national Easter bread competition organised by the Echte Bakkers guild. Remarkably, this means he is retaining his title. “Not only the most beautiful but also certainly the tastiest Easter bread won this year,” said the enthusiastic jury. Martin Nijkamp certainly knows how to bake; he has also reached the podium many times with his oliebollen.

Second place is also no unfamiliar name in the baking world: Joost Snijders from Stramproy also retained his title. His Easter bread with vlaai lattice was particularly well received. The bronze goes to Toet, De Echte Bakker from Apeldoorn, who has reached the top three with his Easter bread for the first time.
