These kitchen gadgets are truly useless (according to the FavorFlav editorial team)

The perfect paring knife, a handy tool for cutting pineapple and a fine grater: over time, you collect the ideal kitchen utensils around you. Unfortunately, there’s always more junk than treasure. You know the kind of stuff you once received or bought, which is absolutely no use to you. What junk is gathering dust in the kitchen drawers of the FavorFlav editorial team?

Let’s make a list of the kitchen gadgets you don’t need to buy. No matter how cheap, if you buy one of these handy little things and it just lies there, in the drawer with the rubber bands, spare batteries and satay skewers, it’s still a waste of money. These are the items the FavorFlav editorial team advises against.
Doesn’t fit either
Adeline: ‘Useless: the slotted spoon. I never use it. At first, I would occasionally skim the foam off the pea soup, but that’s actually no longer necessary either. It just lies there, not fitting properly in my cutlery drawer.’
What kind of drill?
Renée: That dented tea strainer is really rather sad, and I’ve never used that oyster thing (but because of that, I can’t really have anything against it either). We have a winner: the apple corer! What a bloody useless thing.’

Three knives
Sharon: ‘There are three special butter knives in the drawer. Never used. They’re so cute at flea markets, I fall for them every time. Clearly my housemates don’t, as they always use their regular knives in the butter dish. Maybe my housemates are the useless ones, who knows.’
As good as new
Lauretta: ‘A device for separating eggs. It’s even still in the packaging.’

Something to peel apples with
Sabina: ‘In our utility room, quite far back, there’s an apple peeler. You have to clamp an apple between the jaws and then turn it, and it gets peeled and sliced. And afterwards, you have to spend fifteen minutes cleaning the thing. When really: how much work is it to peel an apple?’
Should work (but no)
Marcus: ‘The kitchen’s lost child is an unclear plastic contraption with which you’re supposedly able to poach eggs very easily. With steam. It doesn’t work.’

No cocktail, but the spoon
Wieke: ‘For inexplicable reasons, I have three of those long, thin cocktail spoons that I simply refuse to throw away, even though I’ve never made a cocktail at home.’
A whole basketful
Delilah: ‘The kitchen utensils that never get used aren’t in a drawer here; they even have their own basket (there are that many). There it is: the pineapple slicer. Useless thing. But also: the trivet rack. And the ice pop moulds. And a non-digital meat thermometer. And the garlic press. And an inferior bread knife – but hey, “you never know”…’
