These People’s Valentine’s Day Went Completely Wrong

How is your Valentine’s Day going today? Surely it’s not as terrible as that of your fellow human beings… No, these stories from Reddit readers prove that Valentine’s Day isn’t always roses and sunshine – far from it, in fact.

Hospital visits, another woman’s underwear and Celine Dion all make an appearance. Read on and shudder.
7x terrible Valentine’s Day stories
Love can be painful…
@frusciantefango: ”A few years ago, I had a nice M&S (Marks & Spencer) Valentine’s meal deal and was enjoying sea bass with my boyfriend. A small bone got stuck in my throat. It pricked and I had to cough – I kept coughing, couldn’t get it out, started to panic, ran to the toilet while coughing even harder, gagged a little and then threw up the bone and the fish, like some kind of mother penguin. Bit of a mood killer.”
…but it can be worse
@Longy77: ”I fell down the stairs in a local restaurant while I was with my girlfriend. My foot was literally pointing the other way from where it should have been. I spent the night in hospital.”
Two heartbreaks
@ellafantile: ”I have two terrible ones:
- My boyfriend of just over a year decided to start a conversation during our Valentine’s picnic about why I had been so distant lately. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to break up or not, but because he brought up the subject, the conversation ended with us breaking up… before we had even finished eating.
- My husband and I no longer go out on Valentine’s Day because a few years ago we went to one of our favourite restaurants, ordered the set menu and then… they simply forgot about us completely. We literally received nothing except our drinks, so at some point we just got up and walked out.”
All by myself…
@innitdoe: ”I was away from home for work, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I was staying at the local fancy country-house hotel, mainly because there weren’t many other options. After a long day, I returned to my room exhausted on Valentine’s Day. The hotel called to try to persuade me to eat in their restaurant. On my own. On an evening when the entire place was packed with couples having a romantic dinner for two. I refused and agreed to a compromise: a beer and a sandwich in the bar.
Ten minutes later, I went downstairs and sat in a completely empty bar. A young waitress, who came over laughing, brought me a rather pathetic sandwich, some crisps and a beer. ‘Wait a minute,’ she said, ‘this isn’t very cosy, I’ll put some music on for you.’. She walked away, I heard laughter, and then that awful Celine Dion song started playing at full volume: “…aaaalll by myseeeeeelf”.
And so I paid more than £100 a night to be ridiculed by the hotel staff on Valentine’s Day, while I was far away from home and family.”
Sick with love (or a bad lunch)
@anonaway456: ”It was our first Valentine’s Day together. We had plans to go out for a nice dinner after work. At the time, I often worked late and usually ate takeaway meals. During the night, a colleague became ill and didn’t show up for work. I thought I was fine, but on Valentine’s Day I eventually got severe food poisoning and had to vomit in a customer’s toilet – and not just a little bit either. I left early and was on my way home when he came to meet me halfway and gave me a kiss (I don’t even want to think about what my breath smelled like that day!).”
There’s something fishy about this
@pr0foak: ”A friend of mine had been dating a girl for a few months when she went to work in British Columbia during the summer (we live in Ontario, so on the other side of the continent). He’s a fairly chaotic person and doesn’t always think things through. His girlfriend loves fresh produce, so he thought it would be a nice idea to send her a surprise package of fresh vegetables. So he went to the farmers’ market and bought a few different types of organic vegetables that he wanted to send by post. While putting the package together, he found a pair of underwear in his room behind his bed and thought: “Why not? I can send her her underwear at the same time, since I’m sending a package anyway.” So the package was mailed. Just through the regular post.
Two weeks later, the package finally arrived and his girlfriend opened it. She found an assortment of rotten vegetables and a pair of underwear that wasn’t hers. It turned out that my friend hadn’t cleaned his room (or at least the space behind his bed) when he started dating another woman…”
Really romantic
@FulaniLovinCriminal: ”On our first Valentine’s Day together, I was actually supposed to work, but because it was incredibly quiet, I was allowed to finish early. I called my (at the time) girlfriend to ask if she had received my Valentine’s card. It turned out she was just on her way, so she got off her train and we met up.
Of course, everywhere was full. Even Nando’s and Pizza Hut had no tables available. Eventually we ended up at McDonald’s. My wife is partly vegetarian, simply because she doesn’t like meat, so she doesn’t eat the veggie burgers from McDonald’s either. So she only ordered fries. And watched me wolf down a Quarter Pounder Deluxe, a double cheeseburger, a chocolate milkshake and my own fries.”
Sidenote from yours truly: I would have had the Valentine’s Day of my life at Maccies. (Lover, are you reading this?)
