These restaurants also ranked #1 in ‘The World’s Best Restaurants’

Oops I dropped the lemon tart

You can’t have missed it: France’s Mirazur has been named the world’s best restaurant this year. Naturally, it’s on our must-eats list. But who won in previous years again?

(2016 and 2018) – Osteria Francescana***, Modena, Italy

Chef’s Table seen it? Then you know what to expect at Osteria Francescana: Italian cuisine à la chef Massimo Bottura, with a twist. The ‘Oops, I dropped the lemon tart’ remains iconic: a zabaglione with lemon and limoncello that looks as if it has fallen on the floor. For now, unfortunately, we’ll have to settle for watching the Netflix episode, because the waiting list is endless.

(2017) – Eleven Madison Park***, NYC

My rule: if it comes from New York, it’s good (just a little biased). And Eleven Madison Park is an excellent example of that. The restaurant is quite pricey, though. With a tasting menu, you’ll spend an average of around 275 euros, and with matching wine, as much as 500 euros per person. Luckily, they still have their cookbooks, so you can try your hand at these culinary masterpieces yourself.

(2013 and 2015) – El Celler De Can Roca***, Girona, Spain

At the restaurant run by the three Roca brothers, you can enjoy a thirty-course menu (!) – yup, you heard that right. The tasting menu is inspired by the brothers’ lives. One dish even has a very special presentation: a replica of a bar where the brothers always used to hang out. On the “bar” and “tables” are snacks such as pork parfait and breaded squid, along with photos of the brothers.

(2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014) – Noma**, Copenhagen

Halló, Noma, a round of applause for you. This restaurant has been number one not once, not twice, but four times. Seafood lovers, pay attention: this is somewhere you’ll want to eat at least once. Especially sometime around the end of winter and the beginning of spring. That’s seafood season, after all. During this season, you can order a twenty-course menu featuring almost everything you can find in Scandinavian waters. Think sea snails, jellyfish and plankton cake. Want a little taste in advance? This restaurant also appears in Netflix’s Chef’s Table

(2003 and 2004) – The French Laundry***, California

This restaurant was the first restaurant in the US to claim the number-one spot. It was also the first restaurant in the world to rank first two years in a row. The cuisine of this over-achievers is French with a modern twist. For example, you might eat wagyu steak tartare or mac and cheese there, but with fresh black winter truffle. Hello, comfort and luxury in one!
