This is the real (creepy) reason why McDonald’s clown is no longer around

McDonalds ronald mcdonald

As an adult, you undoubtedly go to McDonald’s to satisfy your nugget cravings, burger needs and French fry addiction. In the past, you mainly went for the Happy Meal toys and the ball pit. And: for Ronald McDonald the clown. At least, if you were a fan. Ronald greeted you at every McDonald’s entrance. Why has he disappeared from the face of the earth?

Ronald McDonald clearly had a large fan base and a large group of haters. The latter doesn’t surprise me at all. Have you ever seen how creepy that clown looks, with his white face, bright red wig and tiny black eyes?! I can totally imagine that there are genuinely people who have gone to therapy because of that thing. In 2016, Ronald McDonald suddenly couldn’t be found anywhere. A relief for the group that had nightmares because of him, but fans were (and perhaps still are) disappointed. What happened to Ronald?

Killer Clowns

The reason for his disappearance is actually just as creepy as the clown himself, if you ask me. In 2016, a rather unusual craze was taking place: the Killer Clowns. Remember? All over the world, people suddenly appeared dressed up as scary clowns. They jumped out of bushes, ran after people and suddenly popped up right in front of you. Killer Clowns were especially popular in America and Great Britain. Or, well, popular… People were terrified. Rightfully so. You’d be scared witless if you ran into a clown like that, wouldn’t you?

Those Killer Clowns started as promotion for the horror film IT. But that promotion soon got completely out of hand (why on earth did you think this was going to be a success?!). In Florida, a family was attacked by a large group of Killer Clowns. And in Great Britain, a guy wearing a clown mask ran after a child who was on the way to school. See, that’s when it suddenly stops being so funny. If it ever was funny in the first place.

Clowning around backstage

That series of incidents was the reason McDonald’s no longer saw Ronald McDonald as their cheerful frontman . The chain announced in several countries that Ronald would no longer be seen at McDonald’s. ”But he is still very busy working for us”, the British McDonald’s website stated at the time. Okay Ronald, if you’re working so hard behind the scenes: could you bring back these 11 McDonald’s items, please?

By the way, I think that even now, with the Killer Clown hype having ended about 8 years ago, Ronald McDonald would never really be a success if he came back. Those Killer Clowns really did ruin it a little. Anyway, Ronald can stay backstage as far as I’m concerned. I’m not really into clowns, in case you hadn’t noticed.
