This is the tastiest meatball of 2020
I don’t often brag about my cooking skills, except when it comes to my superior pesto and amazing meatballs. A good meatball can genuinely make me so happy. But mine can be even better: today, it was announced who makes the tastiest meatball in the Netherlands. Off to ’s-Gravenmoer, people, because that’s where you can get it — again!
Almost 80 butchers submitted their artisanal meatballs for the professional competition organized by the Royal Dutch Butchers’ Association. The prize for The Tastiest Meatball 2020 was won by Keurslager van Strien from ’s-Gravenmoer. It is the third time that butcher Marco van Strien has won this professional competition! Slagerij & Traiteur Koen van Vugt from Drunen won second prize. Third prize went to Slagerij De Groene Weg from Deventer.

During the judging, all the meatballs were assessed for aroma, flavor, composition and preparation. This year’s expert jury consisted of industry-recognized master butcher Wouter van de Veen, the winner of The Tastiest Meatball 2019, Jean-Pierre Jongmans, Hans de Goeij and Marloes Hartskamp, both serving as judges on behalf of the Expertise Center for the Butchery Craft Foundation.
A meatball as it should be
The jury said about Keurslager van Strien’s winning meatball: “This is a beautiful artisanal meatball. A meatball as it should be: beautiful shape, wonderful aroma and fantastic flavor. A true winner!” Marco: “This is incredible! Winner of The Tastiest Meatball for the third time. We are incredibly proud to be able to call ourselves the winner of this professional competition again, and very happy that the jury has appreciated our product for several years.” Marco has won this professional competition before, in 2014, 2018 and now in 2020. In 2013 and 2017, he came second.
