Every year, whether there is a pandemic or not, the Great Grill Sausage Test is held – a professional competition organized by the Royal Dutch Butchers’ Association (KNS). More than 120 sausages were on the tasting table this edition. Keurslager Braamskamp from Rolde took home the trophy.

More than 120 grill sausages

A juicy grill sausage that has just come out of the oven… incredibly delicious, if you ask me. More people feel the same way, because grill sausage is often a butcher’s calling card and a favorite of many consumers. More than 120 butchers therefore submitted their grill sausage for this prestigious competition.

Smell, taste, composition and preparation

Based on an assessment at the beginning of March, all grill sausages were judged on smell, taste, composition and preparation. The assessment was conducted under the supervision of the Expertise Centre for the Butchery Trade, assisted by a professional jury consisting of industry-recognized master butcher Hans de Goeij and sausage maker Marco Nieuwaal, last year’s winner. “Making a good grill sausage requires craftsmanship. So many factors influence the end result. The finalists made an honest product with a good to very good characteristic grilled flavor,” said the jury.

But there can only be one tastiest sausage, and that is the one from Keurslager Braamskamp: “This grill sausage has a delicious grilled flavor, a good bite and a beautiful color. A sausage customers will certainly come back for; a truly artisanal grill sausage.” Butcher Han Braamskamp was over the moon: “How proud I am of this result! For the second time, together with my team, I can call us the winners of the Great Grill Sausage Test. A wonderful compliment from the jury and a reward for the hard work that went into this artisanal and delicious product.”

Keurslager Braamskamp is no unknown name in the butchery trade: in 2016, the butcher was a finalist in another KNS competition, namely the Spareribs Trophy. This is the third time that butcher Braamskamp has reached the final of the Great Grill Sausage Test, and now the second time he has won.
