This Is What You Really Want Before December 5: The Sinterklaas Snack Board

There isn’t a single month in which we’re allowed to snack as shamelessly as we do in December. Naturally, it all starts with Sinterklaas’s birthday, every year on December 5. However you celebrate it this year, there’s one thing that absolutely must not be missing from the evening: the Sinterklaas snack board.

We saw it pop up at Oh My Foodness and our hearts immediately started beating with anticipation. This is everything you want on December 5. And the fun part is: you really don’t have to put in much effort. Because honestly, after all those hours spent on that f*cking surprise gift and that goddamn poem, you have absolutely no desire to do so.
How to make it
Take a fun snack board in whatever size you prefer (bigger = more = better) and A. Whole. Lot. Of. Sinterklaas candy. It can be anything; nothing is right or wrong. You can also decide entirely for yourself how difficult or easy you want to make it. Feel like baking? Go for it. Feel like clearing out the entire supermarket? Go for that too. It’s not just Sinterklaas’s party—it’s yours too. Then arrange your baked goods or store-bought treats attractively on the board, and the delightful evening can begin.
Sweet and savory inspiration
Need inspiration for what to put on the board? For example, break up some pieces of chocolate letter (these are the best EVER), cut an almond pastry into pieces (you can buy the very best one here) and gather some chunks of speculaas (follow this recipe if you want to make it yourself). Add some scattered candy which—you guessed it—you scatter all over the board, so the kruidnoten, foam candies and tumtummetjes end up everywhere and nowhere. It will also look as though Piet scattered them around and everything landed on your board very casually.
Of course, you don’t have to stick to sweet treats only. In fact, if you’ve been eating pepernoten since August, it’s perfectly understandable that you occasionally crave something savory. How about pieces of sausage rolls, cheese straws (a fun idea from Oh My Foodness: make them yourself in the shape of a staff!) and little pizza slices? Mini sausages wrapped in puff pastry are always a hit too. Or turn on the deep fryer and fill the board with bitterballen (these cheese-and-beer ones from Lidl are truly heaven).
Once again, December 5 is your party too.
