Tips & tricks

This surprising ingredient makes an incredibly delicious grilled cheese!

dikke tosti

As you probably know by now, we’re huge grilled cheese fans here at FavorFlav. From thick slices of artisanal bread, crisped up in a pan of hot fat, with long strands of luxurious cheese, to the factory-made grilled cheese that’s only a few millimeters thick and is toasted just shy of crispy in the overworked sandwich press at the sports canteen: there’s room in our hearts for all of them!

And when you feel like experimenting a little (and you’ve worked your way through our list of best grilled cheeses), it’s always fun to see what you can find in your kitchen to give your grilled cheese a little something extra. Like this delicious ingredient…

A little pillow of deliciousness

Chef Sohla El-Waylly gives her pan-fried grilled cheese a surprising twist with Medjool dates! “I usually use them because they’re so soft and sticky.” She hides them (pitted, of course) between two layers of Muenster cheese for those perfect cheese pulls. Yummm!

Ultimate tip

And her best tip? Fry the grilled cheese in sunflower oil for the crispiest exterior. The latter is, of course, rather bad news right now, since this particular oil is barely available anymore. Fortunately, there are also good alternatives to sunflower oil. This grilled cheese has it all, she says, and we believe her! Salty with a touch of sweet—we’re crazy about it… And if you want to take it up another level, add thick slices of crispy fried bacon in between! Is that weird? Not at all—just think of our famous pancake with cheese, bacon, and syrup. Another winning combo, right?

Budget-friendly version

And one final tip from us: Medjool dates are absolutely delicious, but can be quite expensive. With Iranian dates (although Medjool dates can also come from Iran), you’ll spend a little less. And believe us, they’re incredibly delicious too. Just make a slit in one, remove the pit, and grilled cheese heaven awaits!
