TikTok Food Hack of the Week: How to Easily Get Tomato Paste Out of the Tin
Concentrato di pomodori; such a fancy Italian name, but in the Netherlands it’s simply called tomato paste. Ideal for adding richness to pasta sauces, shakshuka and homemade ketchup. Opening it—without cutting yourself!—and getting everything out of the tin? As so often, TikTok has found a brilliant way to do it.
Opening a tin of tomato paste isn’t that difficult, is it? True, but this trick is mainly intended to get everything out of the tin. You often can’t scrape it all out with a spoon. I use a mini pan scraper for this myself (super handy!), but even then the silicone scraper can still get caught on the sharp edges and become damaged. Inconvenient!
The hack
In the video, TikToker Laura shows how she first loosens the top of the tin with a can opener, leaves the loose part inside, turns the tin over and then opens the other side. She then removes the bottom, holds the tin over a plate and uses the back of a wooden spoon to push everything out in one smooth movement. Without any tomato paste remaining in the tin. With Dutch tins, you can already pull off the top using the tab, which saves a little twisting.

Worth the effort
We admit it may seem like a bit much, but it really is worth it. Especially if you’re cooking with larger tins of tomato paste. Broke off the tab before you started or don’t have a can opener? No stress, this trick will have that tin open in no time!
