Top Terraces in 010

Summer has arrived once again, and that means only one thing: heading outside and onto a terrace. These days, the entire city is so packed with tables and chairs that choosing can be difficult. That’s why here are our nine favorites in the Maas city.

Aloha
Have we mentioned that we’re fans of this place? Because as grubby as the old swimming pool was a few years ago, it is now one of the hotspots of 010. When you sit here in the sunshine, you can easily imagine yourself in the tropics because of all the palm trees. You look out over Rode Willem while enjoying handmade bitterballen and farmhouse cheddar with honey and ground coffee. If this were the only terrace in Rotterdam, we’d already be happy.

Bokaal
A large terrace right in the city center and more than eighty beers to choose from. You’ll find this only on the corner of Pannenkoekstraat in Rotterdam. At Bokaal, the drinks menu is therefore primarily a beer menu, and you can pair all that barley brew with bar snacks and dishes designed to complement your favorite thirst-quencher. The terrace also has its own outdoor bar and was awarded the AD terrace trophy in 2015.

Koozie
On the still-undiscovered Noordereiland, you’ll find Koozie, which is simply ‘cosy’ in Rotterdam style. This peaceful spot is ideal if you want to enjoy the sun with a book in your hand. You can simply take your reading material from the bookcase inside. Here, you can drink a cup of Rotterdam-based Giraffe Coffee or an organic Slovenian wine.

Prachtig
Our Manhattan on the Maas naturally earned its name from the beautiful skyline, and that’s exactly what you look out over from your table on this terrace. And Prachtig certainly lives up to its name, because its location by the Zwaan provides the most beautiful view—and therefore perfect Instagram shots. Although the place is more than just a pretty view: the juices and wines are excellent here too.

The Boathouse
It was awarded a nine at the 2016 AD terrace trophy for good reason. Because as beautiful as the skyline of 010 is, the view over the still undeveloped Kralingse Plas is more peaceful. And if you’re settling down on this terrace anyway, make sure you share a High Sea with your friends. From two people onward, you can enjoy this fish tasting platter served with toast and sauces.

Biergarten
A familiar name to most, and a favorite of many Rotterdammers when it comes to terraces. Here, you can enjoy yourself with half a liter of beer in your hand and your sunglasses perched on your nose. You only come here when the weather is nice, because Biergarten has only an outdoor bar. We prefer to sit in the stands, which overlook the rest of the terrace, consisting mainly of picnic tables. Do make sure you arrive on time, because it is already packed here at the first rays of sunshine.

Thoms
In 2016, this terrace was allowed to take home the AD trophy as the nicest terrace in the Maas city. This time, right in the city center, on the well-known Meent. The high tables on this stretch of sidewalk are perfect for drinks, but there are also low tables if you want to enjoy an extended meal. We’re especially fans of the stewed-meat bitterballen.

The Oude Haven

There are so many nice places at the Oude Haven that we could make an entire list just for this area. To keep things simple, we’ll give you our two favorites. The first is Stockholm, perfect for an evening drink, as they have several gins and tonics and an entire list of cocktails. You can also get a good Old Fashioned or Moscow Mule here. Another favorite of ours along this stretch of water is APARTT. Order bruschetta with your drinks, or enjoy potato soup and a schnitzel so large that it makes your plate disappear underneath it.
